Commentary by Dr. Lim Teck Ghee
"The Government's announcement that it is repealing the 30% Bumiputera equity requirement for listing is long overdue but still welcome. It is not so much the percentage share issue that is at the heart of concern. It is whether we are in fact really transitioning to a freer, more robust, more race-blind and investor friendly economy. We have been stuck in a crony-ridden, inefficient, racially-biased and corruption-prone economic system for too long. Even the government now admits that the failure to achieve set targets was due to leakages - deviations and abuses that were clear for a long time but which were tolerated. The Bumiputera equity leakage over the years amounted to over RM52 billion alone if the Government's estimates are to be believed. |

Another reason for Mahathir's constancy as a media icon deserving coverage is the popular perception that Dr Mahathir indeed is and continues to be an UMNO power to contend with behind the scenes. This power was believed to have been brought to bear on the famous ex-PM's son-in-law Khairy Jamaludin, who won the UMNO Youth contest at the recent UMNO General Assembly but was bypassed for a Cabinet post by newly-minted UMNO President Najib. |

Commentary by Dr Lim Teck Ghee Continuing The Great Scholarship Debate Before 1990, almost all scholarships for degree courses overseas were given to bumiputera, former Member of Parliament-cum ISA detainee Dr Kua Kia Soong disclosed. See his article in end note below. Repeated calls for transparency in JPA scholarship disbursement, and the inevitable national outcry yearly against its unfairness indicate that the ethnic disparity issue was not remedied until 2008 – or nearly twenty years after the NEP was supposed to have ended. According to the government data released in Parliament, non-Bumiputras accounted for 45 % of JPA scholarship receipients in 2008, up from 24% in 2006 and 35% in 2007. This is a healthy trend but is it confined only to JPA awards? |

http://art-harun.blogspot.com/2009/06/please-dont-turn-our-children-into.html 25 June, 2009 Some years ago, my friend interviewed a local graduate for pupilage. The interviewee spoke flawless Bahasa Malaysia. He carried himself well and answered all my friend’s questions confidently. Until, of course, my friend started speaking English. He asked the interviewee, “Why did you read law?” The interviewee looked into my friend’s eyes for a moment and appeared to be in deep thought. Finally he said, “Because I want pass my exam.”

The above is simple enough for all of us to understand. But then, all of us are wondering how on earth the Federal Court could have decided that the “The Election Commission is the rightful entity to establish if there was a casual vacancy in the Perak state legislature”? Don’t you all feel superior to the judges of the Federal Court because you know the correct answer whilst the highest court gave a wrong decision. So you see, when you know how to judge the judges you would be able to separate the wheat from the chaff among our judges. The chaff, you will discover, may not be up to your expectations. |

Scholarships and Perak, a microcosm of NEP success and failure |
Commentary by Dr Lim Teck Ghee The truth is Umno, its cronies and Malay interests – in this order – have always been well protected; it is communal parties like MCA and MIC that have not protected the 'legitimate interests' of Malaysia's minority communities though they have done very well for their own leaders and cronies. Take for instance the some 100,000 student enrolment of UiTM. Can we imagine any other country in the world practising the same exclusive ethnic policy (with a token non-Malay intake)? Say a country called Ruritania declares Acme, a public-funded university, open only to majority whites; and the Education Minister promising that he would not allow a single minority black to be admitted into Acme. How would we react? Read more...
__________________________ Visiting The Malay Rights
by Art Harun Malay rights. What a subject. The mere mention of it evokes so many emotions. So much anger and resentment have resulted – on both side of the fence - from this subject. It has been explored by the likes of Awang Selamat, Mahathir Mohamad, Ibrahim Ali and various NGOs. Our politicians have shouted and screamed about it. Warnings of mayhem and amok have been sounded in case of a challenge against these rights. Even HRH the Sultan of Perak had spoken about it recently. But I notice not a single person out of 27 million of us has actually taken the trouble to spell out what these rights actually are. And so, let me be the first one to do it. Read more... ________________________ More mischief from Utusan's Awang Selamat by Helen Ang Utusan is clearly fanning racial sentiments and deliberately racializing matters like Chin Peng's wish to return home. Its front page editorial cartoon featured a speech bubble with the snide remark, “Just appoint Chin Peng as PKR advisor ...”. Putting in his two sen worth, Awang Selamat accused the Pakatan Rakyat supremo of trying to gain “political dividend” and Chinese support through his statement declaring that he [Anwar Ibrahim] did want to see a situation where it is alright for a Malay communist to return but not for a Chinese communist to do the same. by Lee Ban Chen If the proposal was not thoroughly discussed, why need to promote it in such a great hurry even under the pressure of objection from majority of the leadership and grass-root members? And if it was not yet a proposal of Pakatan Rakyat, why should Hadi claim that PKR and DAP had supported the idea? Only when the parties concerned denied his claim and sought further clarification, did he change his approach on the idea. As a religious leader, why couldn’t Hadi be more transparent, consistent and trustworthy? Read more... __________________________ Scholarships: The Sultan of Perak disappoints again
Commentary by Dr Lim Teck Ghee Some 17-year-olds with outstanding exam results have asked why they failed to get a Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) scholarship. Some 19-year-olds have asked why they were not admitted into the course of their choice in local public universities despite doing well. Little do they know that by asking these perplexing questions, they are viewed by some quarters as somehow challenging the entrenched interests of the Malays or engaged in potentially anti-national activities. It appears that young (and old) Malaysians are increasingly trespassing into the dreaded Tak Bolehland through 'violating the fundamental provisions in the federal and state constitutions'.
Read more...
