Introduction by Editor, CPI

1Malaysia, 1copyright made the world news this week with wire agencies picking up the story that our authorities have seized Bibles by the truckloads. The word ‘Allah’ (contained in Bibles printed in the Malay language) is the sole proprietary right of Islam, according to the Malaysian government.

The Najib administration’s Top 5 PR firm Apco (rumoured to have been paid RM20 million) might just come in handy to rehabilitate the dented image of Malaysia, especially when a broadcaster with the global reach of CNN tagged this development ‘Bibles seized as Malaysia minorities fear fundamentalism’ – a sobering headline indeed.

Some international reports mentioned 15,000 copies in all were confiscated, others said 20,000 copies. As taxpayers indirectly funding Apco, we’d expect this renowned image shaping company to staunch the bad publicity, just in case further sensational coverage has journalists expanding the numbers to an even more damaging 25,000 or 50,000 copies.

But we can be somewhat reassured given that Apco is a ‘no play-play’ proposition, having represented global cigarette producers Philip Morris no less. Now the ‘damage control’ expertise of an outfit that strategises to make cancerous cigarette smoke smell good is surely not something to be scoffed at.

Known as heavyweight lifters, Apco not only marketed the message to negate the valid health concern which the tobacco industry poses, they are also influential Washington lobbyists. So let’s see how Najib’s expensive PR consultants, with their offices in the USA, deal with this one.

Sole ownership of God

On another note, there was a comment by Malaysiakini reader Md Imraz Muhammed Ikhbal Friday on this seizure of Bibles which was illuminating. He posted: “I really wonder in which other Holy Book did God stipulate that Allah is owned by the Muslims? Of certainty, such provision is nowhere traceable in the Holy Quran.”

Md Imraz’s line of considerate reasoning provides a refreshing departure from the confrontational and sanctimonious stance of people who are bestowed the monikers televengalist/motivational ‘ustaz’ although their PhDs are not in theology, such as Dr Hasan Ali, and Dr Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah whose academic qualification is in political science-Umno thesis.

Showing how inter-faith dialogue can be conducted with civility and in the spirit of accommodation, Md Imraz comments that since Muslims assert that Allah is the sole creator of all things living, then logically all Christians are living creations of Allah too. Thus, he wonders why Muslims are annoyed by others using the same word in their worship.

Md Imraz adds: “Muslims also expect others to acknowledge and respect their religious followings. The chauvinistic ones even impose their religious standards down the throats others. But yet, when people of different religious faith acknowledge their one true God and seek to worship Him by His name, Muslims immediately claim exclusivity over the word.”

CNN: ‘Minorities fear fundamentalism’

Two salient points which can be gleaned, and in fact, ought to be highlighted from CNN reporter Saeed Ahmed’s take on issue are:

  • Rulings by the Islamic, or sharia, courts are directed toward the country’s Muslim, who make up 60 percent of the population. But they worry non-Muslims who see them as Islamism seeping into the moderate nation’s fabric.
  • The country has been mired in inter-faith disputes as well in recent months. In those cases, many non-Muslims complain that the civil courts generally cede control to Islamic courts.

Excerpt: “The seizures have fed fears among minority groups, which see signs of encroaching Islamic fundamentalism in the predominantly Muslim but multi-racial country.”

Saeed then quoted Rev. Hermen Shastri, general-secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia on Thursday saying that “There is a growing sense of Islamic assertion, yes”.

Liberal Muslims and non-Muslims in Malaysia, especially in Bar Council, must speak up more like SIS(especially they are lawyers and hence more eloquent)! Malaysian Muslims (epsecially the educated young in universities and professionals) and Muslim NGOs are being influenced infiltrated by strategic joint-alliance of Al-Qaeda/Muslim Brotherhood/Iranian Mullah's footsodiers, especially through Pakistani, Bangladesh and Iranain students and migrant workers! (this is really dangerous, since they are targeting oil rich Malaysia and indonesia especiallya s their base in SEA, and hence not a joke!). Instead of attacking, discriminating and harassing ordinary Muslims and non-Muslims alike and robbing bibles, why don't the liberal Muslims challenge the Sharia Laws?! The so-called Islamic Sharia Laws, which is extremely sexist, racist and sadist in the first place - that actually is about promoting to all greatly diverse Muslims of different ethnicities, culture and self-identities (and non-Muslims alike - to an extent), Dark Age Arabic culture as superior, rather than about religion, and about justice for all, has no more place in the context of Universal Human Rights and progressive modernity. How could it, when such 'Laws' legitimizes still Dark Age (I mean what the heck!) stoning, flogging, torturing and murdering believers (mostly poor ordinary believers and women/girls/gays) simply for drinking alcohol, for driving, for leaving the house without male chaperones, for not wearing the veil, for going to ('western'/secular) schools, for touching or hugging each other, for listening to music, for dancing, for singing, for simply being a gay, for having affairs, for wearing 'western' underwear, for converting from Islam and on and on, oh my God! Such countless and endless barbarity and savagery has been legitimized under such Dark Age laws until today, most unfortunately, - oh yes, not forgetting the legitimized child-rape ie. PEDOPHILIA crime, against young girls under so called child-bride; honour killings, forced marriages etc!

.....Arab liberals have criticised President Obama`s tendency to endorse conservative and radical forms of Islam while ignoring liberal Muslim trends. A Yemeni liberal journalist accused Obama of appointing Muslim advisors who do not represent the diversity of Muslim opinion and who want to implement oppressive shari‘a rules.[23] Others have criticised Obama`s overtures to the Taliban and Iran as strengthening the radicals and weakening the reformists and liberals.[24]

A similar trend is visible in liberal and mainline Christian denominations whose leaders prefer to deal with Islamic traditionalists and hardliners in interfaith dialogue while ignoring the liberal reformist voices emerging within Islam.

It is time Western governments and Christian Churches implemented a policy of rejecting traditional Muslim and Islamist demands and that they shifted to a position of active support for the new voices of reason and moderation within Islam.

Barnabas Fund applauds these encouraging moves and the courageous Muslims advocating them.

The Christians worship man God they called Jesus. Jesus comes from the vigina of a woman. By allowing the use of the word Allah, there is a problem of Christians equating their man-God the same as Allah. Allah begets not nor is he begotten. But Christians believe that the father God ****ed Mary to beget the Son of God.

Hence allowin these man - God worshipers to call their God Allah would tantamount to Muslims accepting the trinity of God and the belive that the son of God comes out from the vigina of a woman.

In this regards, I agree with the corrupted BN-UMNO government.
Apollos  - Do you know your own theology?   |2009-11-01
Hey mustafa, please learn your Islam theology and Christian theology before you even hit the keyboard. What you have written is pure thrash and it insults not only Christians but Muslims too who believed Jesus was born of a virgin birth.
Mustafa Ahmad Tok Kok   |2009-11-01
mustafa ahmad, you don't even know your own religion and obviously you know nothing about Christian Theology. Call yourself a Muslim?

That's Dark Age Arabic culture for you Mustafa Ahmad! So you are taught in your kind of Islam (Al-Qaeda type is it?!) that Jesus was not a prophet? Strange, when I was a Muslim, I was taught that fact! And excuse me, before you insult so arrogantly God and the true Islam (that needs to be reclaimed from such Dark Age Arabic culture - because God and Islam do not belong to Mohammed and his culture) and other religion such as Christianity, learn to read modern/enlightened books and think rationally!

Mustafa, I am really sorry to read that you don't your own religion. Read surah al Maryam please, as your own religion used tat expression but in bible, it is described as ' came upon'. Does God need to impregnate by having sex?

In the same surah it is noted that Isa is a prophet.

And please don't use vulgar words le.

FROM EXCLUSIVE TO INCLUSIVE

Let's believe in the God that's inclusive
For He is never meant to be that exclusive
Though we as human beings may be impulsive
Let's unite under God and not be divisive

Paul Warren  - BUT WHO IS THE AUDIENCE?     |2009-11-02
The whole article suggests Malaysia's actions as being extremist and threatening to human cohabitation. But wouldn't that be the non-Muslim view?

There are Indonesians who wished their country too would emulate Malaysia. And you can well bet there are whole lot of Talibans and Pakistanis who cheer on Malaysia's anti Christian stance. and since Malaysia believes that their economic well being is brought about by the support of the Talibans, Pakistanis and Indonesians isn't it more important to Malaysia about how their supporters think? As it is Malaysia is already doing its best to "tolerate" all the non-islamic institutions. Indeed if only they were to follow everything they are obligated to when they have a Muslim majority and the reins of political and fire power in their hands; maybe its about time the world appreciates the tolerance and the forbearance and the willingness not to completely abide by whats expected by some extremists!!

There are extreme flaws practically in all so-called man-made religions because firstly they are archaic and secondly cannot be substantiated by any means.Evidential exposition based on empirical is very much scientific in nature that no one can deny results borne out of them.My question is why then are there people who simply ignore the truth and tend to corrupt fellow beings?

DON'T LOCK UP THE BIBLE

God's Word in the Bible is not meant to be locked up
Though there'll always be attempts to have it shut-up
When in reality God wants us, with Bible, to live it up
Thus we all know with God's Word we don't ever give up

Billy  - Love in Islam     |2009-11-04
Maybe my Muslim friends can help me out on this one. I have spoken to many Muslims to ascertain why the word LOVE is hardly mentioned at all in the Holy Quran when the Bible on the other hand, professes so much on it right from the Old to the New Testament. None could give me an answer. Is this because of the absence of such a belief that a person like Osama Bin Laden could twist the Islamic teachings to propogate violence? If there is love, there is no need for violence no matter how one tries to spin God's text. Love is the cornerstone of Christian teaching and it is based on this one simple word that Christians hope to build a better future for its own community.
Sube Sun  - Stick to the Topic   |2009-11-05
Is is to typical of Malaysians to over-react. Mustafa Ahmad made some idiotic statements and suffice to not answer a fool lest the thinks he is wise in his jaundiced eyes.

The religious authorities are acting ultra-vires any known law in Malaysia and it is up to the Christians to challenge the ruling in a court of law and if they fail to the International Courts.

Malaysia is now the laughing stock even of the Islamic world for this ban and confiscation of the Bibles because Allah is not even a Malay word.

In fact it is muslims who have borrowed the word from the non-muslims since it was a term for God that was used pre-dating Islam.

But when did the religious authorites stick to the truth or sense of justice when it comes to wanting their way?

Malaysia's image has been badly damaged by this latest attack on democracy and religious freedom and the failure of the government to put things right shows their complicity which no amount of propaganda and hype by slick PR firms can cover up.

Assalamu alaikum,

Nice blog, the content in this blog is very useful to the people who are looking out for islamic knowledge.
Anak Sarawak  - Islam II   |2010-01-16
It has not been mentioned so far that the natives (Sea Dayak, Land Dayak, Dusuns, Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit, Selakau, Kadazan, Ukit, Beketan, Lun Bawan, etc) and majority inhabitants of two the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak are mostly Christians. The Sea Dayak language is very close to Malay language and for over a century, they have used the word "Allah" in their Iban bible. It can be said that the many of the Malays of Sarawaks are descendants of Dayaks who had converted into Islam. So it is not unexpected that there is a great deal of similarity in their languages. So it is not unexpected that they would use "Allah" or to be exact Allah Tala in their bible.
As a condition for the two states to form the Federation of Malaysia with Malaya and Singapore in 1963, the freedom of religion was enshrined into the Malaysian Constitution albeit that it was agreed that Islam be the official religion NOT the national religion. As such, Malaysia is a secular federation of states. As a Sarawakian, it is not so much as to the use of the word "Allah" that is at stake. It is the constitutional guarantee, as agreed by the founding fathers, of religious freedom. Otherwise (plus other conditions), we would have not form the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
We are not Orang Pendatang (migrants) so if you Muslim Malays of West Malaysia don't want to live with us in peace, we better cede, like Singapore, from Malaysia. Lee Kwan Yew did the right thing to bring Singapore out of Malaysia in 1966.
