In the military, the non-Malay is ridden like a horse
Bloggers Buzz
Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi remarked that non-Malays shun a military career because they lacked patriotism. His sense of history and of the contributions of the Chinese, Indians and our brothers from East Malaysia towards the sovereignty of Malaysia leaves something to be desired. Zahid's is a racist and bigoted view, pure and simple.
I've previously blogged about the winners of valour awards, not including those who had laid down their lives, are maimed, and not forgetting the non-Malay police officers. (See my web page; Use the drop down menu in the archives on the top right column.)
I guess when the Chinese and Indians were bleeding and dying for this country, Zahid might just have been a dirty glint in his father's eyes. I am not insulting this dull fellow, just that this shallow-minded individual needs some input regarding who was the first Malaysian to be awarded the Pingat Gagah Berani. He was a Chinese! Sergeant Chong Yong Chin PGB of the First Federation Regiment.
Dey Zahid, I suppose you did not know that. Insults have to be politely reciprocated with civility, I am doing just that.
Did you not know who was the first recipient of the Pingat Gagah Berani in the Congo? That person too was a Chinese, Lieutenant Lee Ah Pow PGB, read about how shoddily he was treated too! It had to take Brigadier R.S. Noronha of the Indian army (during a UN peacekeeping mission in Congo) to recommend him for an award. Lt Lee had shown exemplary courage and tremendous restraint under fire, yet his own Malaysian high command overlooked his valour.
There was another young Chinese officer, Lt David Fu Chee Meng, who too was awarded the PGB at the Battle of Tanah Hitam.
So those guys were not patriotic enough for you? Here is my favourite, someone I know personally, Sergeant Choo Woh Soon PGB, my wife's uncle. The short guy in the centre of the photo is Sergeant Choo Woh Soon PGB. This guy, patriotic enough for you?
How about this Indian officer and Chinese soldier dying together to save your sorry butt from the commies? Captain Shanmuganathan PGB and 207770 Ranger Mat Isa bin Hassan PGB, do not be deceived by the name Mat Isa, he was a Chinese.
How about this Indian officer who laid down his life at the ripe old age of 24? Captain Mohana Chandran al Velayuthan (200402) Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa. Not patriotic enough for you? Here is another Indian who got the PGB, Second Lieutenant Panir Chellvum a/l Velaithan PGB. Still not patriotic enough for you?
M'sian soldiers burn cross
How about this where a sorry excuse for an officer caused the death of 13 Italian airmen in the Congo. The Malay Major had shirked his responsibilities of providing the airmen with protection, placed them in danger by ordering them to be brought to the mess and allowed them to be captured by the rebels. The Major then further disgraced himself by ordering all the officers and men at the mess to surrender their weapons to the rebels who had surrounded them, which they did sheepishly.
Malaysia's name had to be salvaged in this incident by Second Lieutenants N.H. Siebel PGB and Captain Maurice Lam PGB, notice their names, they were non-Malays.
How about the time in Bosnia where soldiers desecrated a Catholic Cross? Again the situation was salvaged by the non-Malays. For posterity I have another link here about how the then Defence Minister Najib Razak excused the burning of Croation Catholic cross by two Malaysian UN peacekeepers stationed in Bosnia-Herzegovina as "unintentional".
I will not even talk about the vandalising of the Hoba meteorite in Namibia.
Here is another Indian, who after serving a total of 29 years in both the police force and the army is denied his pension. The reason being he did not attend the weapons course and tactics course. What weapons and tactics course, when he and his men wiped out the remnants of the enemy in Selangor. What would his unshaved instructors teach him? Read about him, Captain Courageous aka Mukhtiar Singh s/o Sodagar Singh.
In any other army in the world today, they would have cited Mukhtiar Singh for courage and piled honours on him without any questions asked. Unfortunately he is an Indian in Malaysia, get that Zahid?

Here is a picture of an all Chinese group of Kinta Valley Homeguards who fought the Malayan Communist Party. More pictures here.
The problem with people like Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is he does not know about people like these Chinese and Indians who were willing to die for Malaysia unconditionally. They only wanted to be treated fairly. The current situation is like "some people are more equal than others".
East M'sians discriminated against
People like Zahid are wind bags, full of foul air and all empty talk.
If you notice the minorities were significant in numbers in the forces when Malaysia was in danger, from the Japanese occupation of Malaya, the Emergency, Confrontation and the subsequent Emergency until the cessation of hostilities by the Malayan Communist Party.
Remember the Communist Party of Malaya did not surrender. It was a treaty for the cessation of hostilities. Freeing our Great Leader to push his agenda of Ketuanan Melayu, subsequently his achievements were ... I shall just cite one, i.e. the amazing statement that Anwar Ibrahim socked himself in the left eye to gain public sympathy and give the police a bad name. Mahathir could not do many of the things he has done if the Malayan Communist Party was on the warpath as it would increase their numbers. Zahid, being an ardent fan of this old goat, is still playing to the gallery.
Soldiers who have served, the non-Malays, know what it is to be discriminated against because of their race and religion. Even the Bumiputras of Sabah and Sarawak are discriminated against, as most of them are Christians.
While at this, being an ex-soldier and all, I have seen many East Malaysian officers serving in combat units. Why did not any one of them make it to General? Not good enough?
Sarawak Rangers
Look at how brave, loyal and patriotic they are. See in the archives for the records I've compiled. After seeing the results of the Sibu 'buy elections', where the BN lost, I guess they saw the writing on the wall and recently promoted an Iban officer to become the first Iban who made it to General, Stephen Mundaw, in September this year.
Anyway that is peanuts, East Malaysians should demand and expect at least a 4-star General from amongst the Ibans, whose bodies have been littered across the battle fields in Malaysia. Their courage and ferocity in battle is unmatched.
Lack of promotion prospects
After having served many years and plodding along, being bypassed by juniors and incompetents, there are so many grievances. There is not enough space to write it all at one go. Is it not heart wrenching? You expect patriotism to burn brightly in the hearts of the non-Malays when our children are discriminated by virtue of race and religion?
Treat everyone equally on a level playing field and you will not need to ask for the non-Malays to defend this country. The numbers would be so huge that you would have to send most of them back.
In the military, the non-Malay is ridden like a horse, for the greater benefit of the majority. No rewards, when it comes to promotions and benefits ... they forget you. You know about the old race horse, that it runs until it drops dead or is put out to pasture. Most non-Malays make it to the rank of Major, I am sure you have heard this before, about the infamous glass ceiling. That is the rank you have to be happy with.
You are not promoted on merit. I know of guys who can barely speak English but become Generals. During my time all the courses were in English. Ask the ex and serving non-Malays about the subtle hints to convert. They do not even respect your faith by suggesting that. If they're always hinting to you that you should convert, it means they look down on you.
Religious and racial discrimination go hand in hand.
I have also had the privilege of seeing a General's knees tremble, when he stepped out of my Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) as I helped him down. This was after an exchange of fire. I was the escort commander and he was riding in my IFV in Somalia.
A hundred non-Malays would, without hesitation and asking questions, charge a hill of 10,000 enemies to defend their country, Malaysia, if you treated them and their offspring as Malaysians and not as dhimmis and second-class citizens.
I could continue shellacking Ahmad Zahid until the cows come home but it is us who are to be blamed. He is the MP for Bagan Datuk, Perak. Those of us who continue supporting MCA and the MIC, are actually getting him elected year in, year out. Your votes have made him arrogant. If you notice his majority is actually shrinking. So the strongest message for the Defence Minister would be to boot this racist Umno supremacist out of Parliament in the next general elections.
Never forget.

Yennadei Macha,
Mabuk dari mess nights Intake SSC37 sampai sekarang belum habis ka?Itu jam CO Tuah Mej Mohammad kasi you minum beer banyak murah you tak ada komplain pun . Sekarang apa hal bising2.Just joking, Mej (B)Swami. Salam Satu Malaysia, salam ATM and salam from overseas from a fellow Malaysia and ex-army officer.Nobody disputes contributions from non-Malays and non-Muslims in Malaysia, not me at least.I have seen a road in Majidee Camp or Pulada named after the late Kapt Chandran. When Capt Chandran died a hero, I was still in high school in Ipoh and was living in the PPH Hulu Kinta camp by virtue my late father was the camp's commandant of the PPH training school from 1970 till 1974.That was the time when Kapt Chandran was involved in the firefight with the CTs. There was a lot of commotions going on within the PPH camp, Hulu Kinta camp was a hub for ops efforts against the CTs during the 70s. I ran to a vantage point each time I heard the Nuri aircraft making a landing or take-off at the parade ground in the camp.It was a huge camp for a small 13 years old boy like me then.I felt for our fallen ATM heroes and PDRM heroes too, I was fully aware when Kapt Chandran and his men were battling the CTs at Gunung Korbu, that mountain range is the permanent back drop of Hulu Kinta PPH Camp. I was in my early teens then, but I knew he was a Malaysia hero in the making, without the slightest discrimination felt in my heart.I did not know who Kapt Chandran was exactly, whether he was a Hindu, or a Christian. All I knew was his men and him killed a lot of bandits, in a prolong firefight. I wasn't even aware if he was from a Renjer battalion, but I knew he was a fallen hero, they took some time to retrieve his body. Such was the situation awareness of a school boy,who father was himself a commy fighter during his heyday. When the brand new M16A1 was formally introduced into ATM and PDRM services, I had the previlege to personally handle the weapon when my dad took one brand new example home. This could be the one of the few reasons that ignited the patriotism in me.My choice of unit to join during cadet day were RAMD,Renjer and Armour. No thoughts about racism, just patriotism.
Rear Admiral Thanabalasingam in the 70s was also my hero,as well as many state PDRM CPOs of Chinese or Indian etnicity. Woi Macha Swami, my dad's boss at Hulu Kinta was SAC of Police Sockalingan, does this ring a bell?; hello Tuan Swami, he was not a Malay or even a Mamak, I knew at that time he was a full-fledge Hindu.Discrimination? His wife, whom I addressed as Mrs Sockalingam, was also the headmistress at my Methodist Primary School, Tg Rambutan.Discrimination, racism? Remember the Chinese Perak CPO that was assasinated by the CPM assassins in Ipoh?I have no hesitation calling my senior non-Malay officers Tuan. What's the bullshits talking about ketuanan Melayu in Malaysia and ATM!
I agree that the the Minister in the topic of discussion made a terrible mistake by saying non-Malays lacked patriotism when their numbers dwindled during new recruit and officer registration. He is a civvy after all, a full time MP for the most of his career life, what more can you say. What I understand from a cultural point of view, the Chinese value the freedom of being a civillian and loathe the idea of serving the government or the emperor as a soldier, since 5000 years ago, partly because the stigma as being labelled as 'the government's dogs'.Even the CPM's clandestines radio Suara Malaya, coined the phrase 'anjing kerajaan' to all us fighting the PKM, that includes us Askar Melayu too.Of it hurts psycologically at that time , but I don't give it a damn back then.
What do you expect Macha Swami, to have a Chinese or an Indian PM in Malaysia now? Where do you put and what do you take them for,the Malay sultans in this land now called Malaysia, slightly earlier called Malaya, and further in time it's called Tanah Melayu? Of course they want Malays to be the PM all the time. Malaysia is a young democracy, 'things' will take time to settle down.Oh yes you can say why Obama can be a president in the US, look how they, the predominantly white House of Senate, are giving him a hard time as a president.I feel happy for a black African-American president in Obama, does that make me a racist?
Well, forgive me for my impromptu remarks Macha Swami, I think it's not accurate and appropriate to place racist comments on your blog.Bila mabuk cadet traning 1980 sudah habis, kita duduk baik2, sembang2 cerita lama masa kedet dulu, over roti prata and teh tarik la macha,di Jalan Maarof,Bangsar,ka, ok? PS: Not happy about Malaysia, migrate and come to Perth la maca Swami, like me.But I came to Perth, not on hatret reasons to Malaysia or ATM, probably just an economic refugee of sort. Will still maintain my Malaysia passport for ever.Denouce your passport,Swami(ada berani ka?) don't bite and critisize the hands that feed you at the same time la bro.You can't claim to be a hero and a tyrant at the same time either. On the other hand, don't come here bro, remember how the white treated the Aboriginals? It's much worse than in Malaysia, the land of plenty. You know, in the early formation of Australia, it's on the record that the white farmers shot the Aboriginals after work, for sports, maybe. In Malaysia the Orang Asli were not shot at, they served in the Senoi Praq, were given land titles and ICs. Australia do not not even have national ID, they are abit confused on this score.I suggest macha Swami, contest in the next general election, use the correct platform and forum to voice your grievances, and tone down a bit , your lingo, it's not nice.Have a nice day!Regards,
Yours truly,

28-11-2010 | Chiang Kok Kit - Another Chinese Experience in Malaysian Armed Forc
All claims and observations by Major (Rtd) D.Swamis on the experiences of Non-Malays in the Malaysian Armed Forces were (and are still if comments from the dull minister and the former Mahatir Kutty is anything to go by) sadly true and certaintly was what I experienced and observed during my 12 years of service in the Malaysian AF Signals Corp.
Due to the discriminatory policies I was compelled to retire and took on a vocation in the private sector which gave me the freedom and space to rise to my potential rather than in a position of being artificially restrained and suppressed because of my race or religion.
How on earth are we going to progress as a nation where not one Government institution in the country is left untouched by racism to the exclusion of other nobler ideals such as meritocracy, professionalism and excellence in service. Is it any wonder then all our institutions are broken? When a country like Singapore with no natural resources 1/478th the size of Malaysia is expected to overtake us with GDP $210 billion (RM658 billion) for 2010 over Malaysia'a $205 billion.
Even staring in the face of such reality we've so-called leader trying to explain away such disparity because Singapore "did not have any social restructuring goals". What rubbish, he must be senile and his end impending!

The non bumis will never be patriotic to Malaysia. I'm sure they love Malaysia but not uncondtional.I'm a Malaysia born Australian. I can tell you that I love to serve Australia and happy to defend Australia. You may think a slope from Australia thinks he/she a white man. How wrong. Australia never treat me as a slope or an Asian only some Australians but Australia treat me as any other ordinary citizen. On the other hand Malaysia treat the non bumis 2nd class. There are lots of restriction from Malaysia if you are a non bumi ie a non bumi can't be a PM. Ask not non bumis to patriotic to Malaysia but ask why not Malaysia be patriotic to non bumis.

On every recruitment excercise reserve 10% of the positions to non-Malays and see what happens. Their 'patriotism' will go through the roof.

I can't agree more with article written above. I had served for more than twenty years before I resigned from the force. I had been a P.O. for many years but most of my service was with the antivice and anti secret society department. Most of my superior officers were the 'cop tolak ' type. That is, they were very good at dedicating work to me, even the work that was supposed to be done by themselves. I was given Hobson's choice so to say. The worst part is that I was often given instructions to arrest and detain suspects from those rich and influential families, only to see them being freed by my bosses a few hours later for reasons best known to them. I felt most frustrated because of the amount of time and effort that was put in all came to naught. Also,it was very demoralising too to see the suspects grinning at me later just outside the station. I always discourage my chinese friends to allow their children to join the force unless they want them to play the part of a bad cop all the time. The other sore point is to see many of my junior officers bypassed me in terms of promotions.

There I think I must seen almost a hundred waiting( and some had finished theirs) for their turn, of which only three of us were non Malays. The three of us were considered lucky because we obtained the scholarship just because of the quota! This happens all the time since the 70 s and I guess till today. A retired Major once told me that the army recruitment that takes place initially at the rural town hall( Dewan Orang Ramai) many Indians from the surrounding estates ( and i can testify that while i was working in Sepang) did register but what happens later in the day at the respective Govt Rest House where these recruiting guys stay stay, is that they tear up most, I mean 95 %, into the rubbish bin and provide a Report to MINDEF the manipulated recruitment report. The Minister needs to be taught a lesson in Malaysian history !
Only in one way he is right and that is what he is referring to is to the present patriotism of the non Malays
after the shenanigan Mahathir became the P.M. and not before that.
As a result the non Malays now do not have any qualm of being accepted in the armed forces. Since the shenanigan became the P.M. only the Ketuanan Melayu will be appointed to the top of the civil services. Hence 94% of the civil servants are Malays and the remaining 6% are in positions that the government were and still are unable to fill these positions with Malays. To name just a few they are Doctors, Engineers and other Professionally trained personnels.
Have you ever heard of a non Malay
civil servants as head of any department. Any wonder why the numerous pleas, with incentives, for the oversea ex-Malaysia professionals with incentives to return to serve in Malaysia have fallen in deaf ears.
