Softening up students to Islam with History syllabus
Commentary

Whose history is the government pushing on our students and to what effect?
On Oct 23, Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that History will be made a must-pass subject for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia beginning 2013. This puts the subject on par with Bahasa Malaysia in its degree of importance.
The ministry will introduce a revised SPM History curriculum in 2017 as in that year the cohort which started Form One in 2013 would have reached Form Five. Fresh elements to be incorporated when the History syllabus begins its new cycle are ‘patriotism’, ‘citizenship’ and ‘the constitution’, which by extension implicates the so-called social contract.
Muhyiddin said the reason for the move to expand the History syllabus is so that patriotism can be instilled in Malaysian youths.
On Dec 16 – responding to objections raised by some quarters on his proposal – Muhyiddin guaranteed that the government does not have any “ulterior motives??? and reiterated that the government in its decision “only want to introduce a history education to appreciate [patriotism] to help them [the Fifth Formers] become more patriotic???.
Is this the real agenda of Umno and the Ministry of Education bureaucrats and their support group of academics or is this another Umno political lie?
In response, a middle-rank leader of the MCA (not the party president or deputy president or any of the other non-Malay BN party chiefs who have gone mute, dumb and deaf on this issue) has urged the Education Ministry to review the “imbalanced??? account of the country’s history in the school textbooks.
The present national narrative imparted to students – alleges the MCA – favours one race and one religious civilization. According to Loh Seng Kok, the deputy chairman of the MCA publicity bureau, a review is necessary to rectify the shortcomings to “prevent ethnic disharmony in our nation???.
Strong words but from a level of leadership that carries little weight.
Furthering Ketuanan Melayu-Islam interests
Historian Dr Ranjit Singh Malhi, who has written some revision books, recently pointed out that not only do the secondary school history textbooks contain exaggeration and mistakes, but they have also “been used to promote political interests???.
For example, Kapitan Cina Yap Ah Loy played a major role in the development of Kuala Lumpur as a commercial and tin-mining centre but the Form Two history textbook had only one sentence on Yap as “one of the persons responsible for developing Kuala Lumpur???.
The Hindu civilisation of Lembah Bujang in Kedah – which can be traced back to the first half of the first millennium – is dismissed in just two paragraphs whereas the communist contribution to helping Malaya gain Independence is omitted.
Besides the expurgation or omission of key events and developments in Malaysian history in which non-Malay and other civilizational contributions have been prominent, there is a conscious and concerted attempt at propagandizing Islamic elements into the curriculum.
A concerned parent complained in her letter to the editor that the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) writers assigned by the Education Ministry have not confined the textbook content to history alone. “Instead they have extended its boundaries seemingly to push a certain agenda. In the process, our history textbooks seem to have taken on a quest of its own – to win the hearts and minds of our children for that particular agenda,??? she wrote.
History as Islamic Studies
The introduction to the Four Four History textbook by the panel writers begins with “Syukur kepada Allah s.w.t. Tuhan Yang Maha Agung, selawat dan salam ke atas Rasul utusan yang mulia, para sahabat, dan mereka yang berada di jalan yang benar hingga ke hari kemudian kelak???. Students belonging to other faiths, who Muslims do not consider to be walking on “the true path to the Hereafter???, will apparently have to re-orientate their mindset in order to do well in this subject.
The introduction to the Form Five textbook by the director-general of the Education Ministry starts on the note of “Syukur ke hadrat Allah s.w.t. kerana hasrat dan wawasan Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia untuk menerbitkan semula buku teks KBSM dan KBSR telah terhasil???. The Education D-G Abdul Rafie Mahat found it expedient to thank Allah for the success of his Ministry’s vision to republish the textbooks under the revamped syllabi.
In fact, two out of the four writers of the DBP writers selected to do the job for the Form Four syllabus are specialists in Islamic history. Their knowledge of Malaysian history and the history of non-Islamic civilizations, however, appear dismal.
Not only is an overwhelming proportion of the Form Four history textbook devoted to Islam (115 pages), conversely the other religions are barely given a passing mention; Hinduism gets half a page in Chapter 3 on the early civilizations of southeast Asia.
The concerned mother who wrote the letter, already widely disseminated online, has charged that History in Malaysian schools “seek to influence the young minds of our children who come from various faiths, to follow the prophet [Muhammad] … who is repeatedly praised throughout the chapters???.
“Students are repeatedly exhorted throughout the book to emulate him as a role model in life???, added the concerned parent. It is quite true what the letter writer observed as flipping through the History textbook pages, one comes across the said exhortations which are indeed explicit and in those exact words. (see endnote).
Do they write History in this way in other countries and do national textbooks elsewhere repeatedly exhort impressionable young minds to follow the behaviour of an individual who features overwhelmingly in their History curriculum?
Furthermore, this subject is a compulsory pass – fail History, fail SPM; no credit in History, no Grade I in SPM. Students are thus coerced to memorize the above brainwashing and internalize the indoctrination or else they will be unable to get through their secondary education.
Non-Muslim parents are correct to worry about the five bulky chapters (out of the 10 chapters in the Form Four textbook) devoted to Islamic history and civilization because they have been written “in a way that seems to be conditioning the minds of our youth to accept Syariah laws as the basis of our legal system in the future???.
Schools becoming madrasahs

These concerns of worried parents have found serious academic backing.
Two academics from Australia’s Flinders University in their paper ‘The Islamisation of Malaysia: religious nationalism in the service of ethnonationalism’ similarly noted that the upper secondary History syllabus “is a more traditional celebration of Malay nationalism, with barely a mention of Chinese or Indians???.
Michael D. Barr and Anantha Raman Govindasamy, who co-authored the paper, believed “the overtly Islamic textbook … was not the result of a whim on the part of the authors, but part of a systemic [Islamization] program???.
They pointed out that the term ‘ummah’ in its unqualified use in the context of Chapter 4 of the Form Four History textbook “carries the clear message that the Muslim perspective is being privileged in this history???.
Barr and Govindasamy added: “The imposition of an Islamic metanarrative at this point can be neither accidental nor incidental. It must be regarded as a deliberate attempt to impose a new form of identity on both the Muslim and non-Muslim children. This conclusion becomes even more pointed if we look beyond the teaching of history, and consider that the Islamisation process has permeated the entire schooling experience for those students who attend national schools???.
With the two authors’ permission, CPI will be reproducing their paper in full tomorrow. Barr and Govindasamy’s Flinders University paper was first published in the Australian Journal of International Affairs, Vol.64, No.3 in June 2010.
The paper unequivocally provides evidence that the Malay and Islamization of the school syllabus has been taking place for some time.
Muhyiddin Yassin’s recent announcement of this impending move by the Education Ministry portends the final nail in the coffin. A sane and progressive curriculum that meets the needs of a multi-racial and multi-religious society is thrown to the winds.
Meanwhile the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has similarly voiced its concerns over History becoming a compulsory subject and the potential impact this will have on students.
On Nov 27, NUTP revealed that the present passing rate for History is around 60 percent. That the remaining 40 percent of the batches who sat the paper previously have failed it mean more students than ever will fail the entire SPM when the Education Ministry decision takes effect in 2012.
Make no mistake. If Malaysians do not raise their voices now and stand up for their concerns, not only non-Malay but also Malay parents and students will reap the bitter harvest of this step backwards in our education system.

People you all forget the most Important FACT!
OVER THE YEARS MALAY CULTURE STOLE AND MADE ITSELF OUT OF OTHER CULTURES! THEN CLAIM THAT IS THEIRS!. The so called Bahasa Malaysia is 90% made out of Tamil, Sanskrit, Hindi then 10% urdu, Malayalam, Chinese, Portugis, Belanda, Farsi, Arab and all other languages.
NOTHING I MEAN NOTHING is theirs, even the clothes, the baju melayu, the cooking style, the adat bersanding, salam......songs all is stolen. So dont be suprised if they want to hide the history, especially Hinduism, that FACT that all Malays were originally Hindus and practised it. REMEMBER this Subjective Question? Berikan Sebab-sebab, mengapa Agama Islam dapat bertapak di Melaka dan menyebar keseluruh Tanah Melayu? So to answer it, we Hindus had to find fault on our own religion and give facts of its own weakness. How painful it felt they dont care......I want you MALAYS to return my Language and Culture to me, keep whatever is left....which is the Sarong!

10-01-2011 | AYDEN - CONCERN PARENTS
IF THIS IS NO EVIDENCE WHAT UMNO IS TRYING TO BRAINWASH THE YOUNG, I WONDER WHAT SARAWAK MP's ARE DOING TO STOP ALL THIS.
LUDICROUS - (read on, still want to vote for BN! think twice)
This history textbook seems to seek to influence the young minds of our children who come from various faiths, to follow the prophet of one particular religion. There is a detailed study of the life of the prophet Muhammad (pg 102 – 107). He is repeatedly praised throughout the chapters. Students are then repeatedly exhorted throughout the book, to emulate him as a ROLE MODEL in life (pg 106, 111, 124, 133, 137, 138).
When one picks up a history book, one would expect to read a fair account of events as they actually happened in the past. Definitely, one would expect the most accurate record possible of history as it unfolded through the decades, written as objectively as possible.
A most reasonable expectation indeed when the book in question is a major textbook prescribed by our Education Ministry for our students nationwide. A book that is instrumental in shaping the young minds of our future generation. The issue takes even greater prominence when the content of that book is going to decide whether our students pass or fail in a major exam on which their future hinges.
Lay hold of the Form 4 history textbook that our children are compelled to digest. Read it for yourself. Take a good hard look while the storm is brewing in the teacup. And it is brewing for good reason. Be shocked at what the syllabus writers have managed to quietly incorporate into our school syllabus just a few years ago, unnoticed by most people, even parents of affected students.
This is no typical history textbook. Simply because the syllabus writers have not confined its content to history. Instead they have extended its boundaries seemingly to push a certain agenda. In the process, our history textbooks seems to have taken on a quest of its own - to win the hearts and minds of our children for that particular agenda. We have to take note that all 4 writers of the textbook comes from only one race and religion, without representation from other faiths and races.
I write as a concerned mother who cares about what my children are being fed in school. I write as a troubled citizen who cares about the younger generation that will one day helm the nation. I write based on my own personal review of the Form
4 history textbook and this review is based on the hard facts of the content of the textbook, without any intention to offend any religion, its prophet or believers. I will leave the review on the accuracy of the history to historians, who are already speaking out on the historical errors and distortions contained. The first fact to note is the overwhelming proportion of the Form 4 history textbook being devoted to Islamic civilization (100 PAGES) while the other religious civilizations are barely given a passing mention (460 WORDS). Out of 10 chapters, 5 bulky chapters are devoted to Islamic history and civilization, which constitutes at least half a year’s study. This certainly is a disproportionate emphasis on one religion, to the exclusion of all other religious civilizations.
Most of us would not mind our children understanding more about Islamic civilization. But it has to presented fairly accurately within a balanced perspective. Do we want to mislead our children to believe that there is only one important civilization in the entire history of the human race and the rest are insignificant? Are the other major civilizations not worth studying in equal if not greater depth?Giving our children a correct and broad worldview can only benefit our nation in the context of a globalized world. Otherwise, our nation will be producing people with an extremely narrow worldview and an incomplete and distorted view of world history. That is to our own loss.
Secondly, this history textbook seems to seek to influence the young minds of our children who come from various faiths, to follow the prophet of one particular religion.
We respect the Muslim belief in the greatness of their prophet. However, we have to respectfully suggest (with no offense intended whatsoever to the prophet) that teachings that encourage students to follow any prophet would more properly belong to a religious class meant for students who already subscribed to that particular faith. It has no proper place in a major history textbook for students of other faiths. In a plural society like ours, the religious sensitivities of other faiths must surely be respected.
Thirdly, throughout the pages of the textbook, history seems to have been written from a religiously biased viewpoint. Other religions seems to be cast in an unfavourable light. Consider some statements found in the textbook:-
(1) Islam is described as a religion easily acceptable and not confined to any race, nation or geography (pg 185).
(2) Islam can be accepted by many people because of the purity of its teaching (pg 110).
(3) The uniqueness of Islam resulted in many people embracing the religion (pg162, 163, 185).
(4) The conversion of some Arab leaders to Islam in 629 AD is described as “an act done after rational investigation into the truth of Islam??? (pg 133).
(5) Islamic social policies are described as so attractive that European Christians converted to Islam during the Byzantize era (pg 163).
(6) Islam requires rational thinking and therefore is accepted by all levels of society. (pg 185).
Sadly, biased religious viewpoints are being unfairly shoved onto our children as established facts within the framework of a narrow religious perspective.Fourthly, the history textbook itself dwells on the teachings of the religion. Whilst the children have to study Islamic concepts (pg 185), no space is given to a balanced comparison with the teachings of other religions. Our youth are therefore taught the virtues of one religion to the exclusion of others. Why not have a balanced approach and allow our children to learn the basic tenets of all major world religions? Allow them to engage in comparative studies. Will it not be healthier to promote better understanding among the races which has positive effect on nation building?
Fifthly, the textbook also promotes Syariah law as suitable and practical for a multi racial nation. It cites the example of the success of the multi racial community in Madinah governed by the Madinah Charter. The formation of an Islamic government in Madinah is stated to thus prove that Islam can be practiced in a wholesome daily living and should be emulated by the Malaysian society. Syariah law is hailed as just, complete and perfect, and can be followed by all communities (pg 128). There is mention of social justice under Islam (pg 128); equal treatment to all people under Islam (pg 110, 128); purity of the struggles of Islam (pg 112); fairness, integrity, consideration and generosity of Islamic economic principles (pg 128).
Perhaps the fifth ground raises the most questions and rings loudest the alarm bells. It makes us wonder why our school history syllabus is written in a way that seems to be condition the minds of our youth to accept Syariah laws as the basis of our legal system in the future? Is there a deliberate political and/or religious agenda at play?
Our Education Minister owes us an explanation. We want to know why our school curriculum has been allowed to be written from such a religious slant by a group of writers of only one religious background. We want to know the reason for this sudden but quiet change in the school syllabus a few years ago. We want to know why our children are compelled to disproportionately focus and digest so much on one religion without a balanced perspective of others?
We must demand for an immediate and urgent revamp and re-writing of the entire history curriculum for our schools and universities. There should be a panel of qualified historians from all races and faiths working reviewing the syllabus. Feedback must be obtained from the public. We must insist that politics and religious indoctrination be strictly kept out of our textbooks.History should be what it is – an objective and accurate record of past events. We must no longer allow our school syllabus to be hijacked for political and religious propoganda. Until then, it is unacceptable to even think that History should be made a compulsory pass subject in SPM.

It doesn't matter, once Johnny finished Form 5 and into whichever private college, Johnny will soon forget whatever historical conditioning he's been "subdued" by for two years.
Now, at full risk of being dismissed as a keris-wielding Malay freedom fighter, Malay-sia is an Islamic state in the first place - though one undergoing intense secularisation and "progress". How can the phrase "Islamisation" even register without connoting the faith's inferiority? How convenient is it to swallow Western academics' flimsy Flinders "papers" and affirm your own convictions?
Truth and justice works both ways. Why not express grievances subjectively? Enough with calling the kettle black, there is a silent young MINORITY out there who are onto such double-standards and proprietor-as-victim agenda.

The "Malay" government should learn from the Americans! From the beginning they have wisely chose to separate religion from the state. The First Amendment to the Constitution states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
Look where the Americans are today!
Today the majority of the people are Malays. The way we push the Islamic agenda is such that the minds will be not only biased but will be closed. When they should be learning in a rich cultural environment right at home, they are learning how to disrespect others, how to deride others, how to pretend to be friends but all the time harboring suspicion and holding a holier than thou attitude. When something goes wrong the blame is always, we must go back to the original teaching. Instead of learning how the Americans, the Japanese, the Chinese and Koreans, how civilizations are progressing we are only interested in interpreting everything in terms of some past glories. All religious history is romanticized! Truth is sacrificed. And so the Malay mind remain close.
For proof of this just listen/view the "religious" programs promoted by the rtm!

It is sad that under the 1Malaysia slogan(said to be the brainchild of Najib),our History will be totally imbalanced with emphasis on studies of one race/religion.
If you want to emphasize islamic contributions, then have a separate subject like 'Islamis Studies' so that people have a choice to choose.
Another point is, what is the motive of the govt to appoint the panel of writers who are majority scholars of islamic studies,to write about Malaysian history instead of real historians from amongst the various races ?
Where is professionalism and wonder how our country will progress if such things keep on coming up?

Islamisation of history is the hardening of the heart and soul of students with group identities of Us Vs. Them: Are you with Islam or are you not with Islam? Are you with this interpretation of Islam or are you with other interpretations of Islam? And ultimately, are you with Ministry of Education's interpretation of Islam or are you not?
Take it you pass, leave it you flunk - try again next year. The basic question is not about Islam nor about history. it is about whether you are with Us or with Them. Even Muslim students with critical minds must regurgitate the official version if they want to pass.
Once the heart is hardened, the empathy and compassion for others is snuffed away - at such tender age. And gone too is the golden rule of all great religions: Don't do to others what you don't want others to do onto you.
Our learning of History is a sad story of hardening of hearts - there is no other History but only the story of His story.
What is history for? Banal patriotism and mindless assertion of moral superiority. Can't it be studied for its own sake?

29-12-2010 | Ken - Critical History
I've heard from a seconday school history teacher in Australia, the children learn what they call Critical History where they are taught that whatever the textbooks say, there is always more than one side to the story that they have to discover for themselves. To learn and then separate fact from perception.
I thot WOW, I wish I learnt history that way in Msian school. Instead I was told to memorise facts, copy entire paras of text directly from the textbooks. No debates. No discussion on alternative views. To just accept the facts as correct and treat the textbook as gospel. Minimal thinking required (or allowed?).
For the sake of our children, if BN loses the next election, I hope we will change our approach to teach history and promote critical thinking skills (duh!). Instead of just 'correct correct correcting' the "facts" in the textbooks.
..........................
In class, they would discuss both sides of any conflict, debate the main characters' motivations, find out what the circumstances are and situations arising and then try to relive the past lifes through role-playing for a more holistic understanding of humanity and the rise/fall of nations. Then be assigned a side and have to debate the issues. To be critical on perceived right & wrongs and to challenge all assumptions.
eg.
Exercise 1:
Imagine what a shirt button on this historical figure would witness on this particular eventful day.Exercise 2:
Debate what this people could have done to avoid being conquered by the other people. And then what the others could do to counter that.

Islamisation of Malaysia's education system has been going on for decades. When I was in primary school in the 70s, a young history teacher spent a whole period glorifying Islam & then asked the students to read about other religions at home. Christian symbols were removed from mission schools due to Muslim 'sensitivity' & suraus became compulsory in schools. This is part of the Ketuanan agenda that has been introduced in small increments to the unsuspecting people. Over time, 'special rights' will be made into a historical 'fact' & schools will become Islamic mission schools. That is unless we do something about it now.
